Multinationals: Reasons You Shouldn’t Hesitate to Apply to them

To be honest, jobseekers are often intimidated by the prospects of applying to multinational corporations. Here are a few reasons why you should take your chance with multinationals.

What Are Multinationals?

A multinational corporation (MNC or just multinational) is a company that operates in at least one country other than its country of origin and generates revenue beyond its borders. To be sure, multinational corporations are not just companies that export their products outside their national borders. They are companies that establish significant business operations and make direct investments in the economy of countries besides its country of origin.

Here are a few notable multinationals and the number of countries where they operate:

  2. PepsiCo: Present in more than 200 countries

The Attraction of Multinationals to Job Seekers

One of the definitive features of multinationals is that they have access to a larger talent pool than smaller companies. This, among others make them attractive employers for job seekers looking for diverse and dynamic career opportunities.

At the same time, this nonetheless, can also be pretty intimidating. And for the right reasons. With their massive workforce, these companies get flooded with applications, making ours feel like just a tiny drop in a huge ocean. Naturally, this feels discouraging and daunting.

These are two major reasons why you should never let the applicant pool discourage you from seizing a chance to work at a multinational presents itself:

Why You Should Apply: Multinationals Are Big on Diversity And Inclusion

Since they have operations in more than one country, these companies are often actively looking to build teams and engage with people from cross-cultural backgrounds. This is one of their greatest appeals.

According to McKinsey & Company’s 2020 report, Diversity Wins, companies with top-notch gender diversity on their executive teams were 25% more likely to have above-average profits than those that didn’t. Diverse teams just perform better!

This means that multinationals have a financial incentive to hire people from diverse backgrounds. A 2023 Deloitte survey showed that 67% of multinationals have specific diversity and inclusion goals. Moreover, 78% of these companies have already rolled out initiatives to boost the diversity of their workforce.

Why You Should Apply: Multinationals Have the Resources to Invest in Training You

In most cases, experience isn’t always a big deal with multinationals because they have the resources to invest in training new talent. If you’re hungry to learn but lack prior experience, multinationals can help you gain entry-level skills that will serve your career long-term.

For perspective, LinkedIn Learning’s 2022 report found that 94% of employees would stick around longer if their company invested in their career development. Multinationals know this, and they’ve upped their training budgets by an average of 22% from 2020 to 2022. They want you to grow and are willing and capable to invest in your growth!

Also, the World Economic Forum’s 2023 Future of Jobs Report showed that 43% of big multinationals offer entry-level roles with awesome on-the-job training programs. Compare that to just 29% of smaller firms.

These are two main reasons why multinationals are a great place to apply. So if there is a chance to send in your CV, dream big and seize it. Put touches to your resume and apply to those multinational roles that intrigue you. You may just land your next great opportunity.
