Here are important dates for tax deadlines in the U.S. and their accompanying forms. These dates are based on the 2023 calendar. If these dates fall on weekends or holidays, the deadline changes to the next business day.
January 16, 2023
This is the due date for self-employed individuals and those with alternative sources of income without any tax withholding to file their fourth quarter estimated tax payment from the previous year. The 2023 date is the filing date for 2022’s 4th Quarter. It is only applicable to those that pay taxes quarterly.
January 23, 2023
The IRS begins the 2022 Tax season and starts accepting and processing federal tax returns in 2022.
January 31, 2023
- All employers must send W-2 forms to employees so they can complete their tax returns timely. You should ensure that you receive this from your employers by this date.
- IRS 1099 forms (1099-NEC,1099-MISC, and 1099-K) are sent out. These forms provide information on payments made to you by someone other than your employer. It applies to independent contractors, self-employed individuals, gig workers, and people who receive income like prize monies, rents from tenants, royalties, interests, and dividends.
February 15, 2023
This is the due date to reclaim exemptions from withholding. If you filed a W-4 form the previous year, choosing to claim exemptions from your employer withholding taxes from your pay, you are to refile the claim on February 15th.

April 15, 2023
- The official tax day in the United States. In 2023, however, tax day falls on a Saturday, and the next business day, the 17th, is the Emancipation Day holiday in Washington, D.C. Hence, Tax Day 2023 falls on Tuesday, the 18th of April. You should ensure you file all your tax requirements by this date or face penalties (up to 25% of your unpaid taxes) and interest.
- The tax day deadline is also the due date for filing Form 4868, used by citizens and residents to request an extension of filing time for individual income tax returns. You should only file this application if you aren’t ready to file tax returns by the tax day deadline. This extension, if granted, applies till the 16th of October, 2023.
- This is also the deadline for making contributions to your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) for the 2022 tax year.
- As mentioned earlier, if you are self-employed and have alternative sources of income, April 15th is the due date for your first quarter 2023 tax payment. This payment is estimated, so you have to determine how much you may earn in the year and how much in taxes you’ll have to pay. You can file using IRS Form 1040-ES, while Publication 505 contains instructions to aid your calculations.
June 15, 2023
This is the due date for your second quarter 2023 tax payment.
September 15, 2023
Your third quarter 2023 estimated tax payment is due.
January 15, 2024
Your fourth quarter 2023 estimated tax payment for the year is due on this date. It is the final quarterly payment you have to pay for the year.
